The Artist

Oscars 2012: A Separation wins best foreign language film

A Separation, an Iranian drama about a couple considering a divorce, wins best foreign language film at the 2012 Oscars

A Separation has won the best foreign language film Oscar at the Academy Award ceremony currently taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The Iranian divorce drama, directed by Asghar Farhadi and starring Peyman Maadi and Leila Hatami, has been in pole position for the Oscar ever since it carried off the Golden Globe last month.
A Separation was up against four other contenders, including Agnieszka Holland's second world war drama In Darkness and the Israeli father-son rivalry story Footnote. It was confidently expected to win the award after Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In, which beat it to the best foreign film Bafta a fortnight ago, was not submitted as Spain's official entry.
A Separation, which examines the moral and social conflicts that arise in a Tehran family after a couple apply for a divorce, was recently criticised as a "dirty picture" by Iranian hardliners, despite its commercial success in the country.

During breaktime, Dara and Nader have a fierce argument about a torn exercise book that the former has

given back to the latter. There are two possible outcomes, which the film shows one after the other.

One is that Dara wants to get his own back, and the two boys start a violent fight; the other is that they

work together to mend the exercise book with a little glue.

Interview with Jumong

Jumong (Korean: 주몽, Hanja: 朱蒙) is a historical drama which aired on South Korea's MBC television network as a 45th Anniversary Special Drama. Originally set to be 60, MBC decided to extend it to 81 episodes due to its popularity. It portrays the life of Jumong Taewang, (founder of the kingdom ofGoguryeo). Few details have been found in the historical records on Jumong, so much artistic license was taken. Much of the original myths surrounding Jumong have been replaced with more down-to-earth storylines, such as that concerning his birth. It is also considered a major part of the "Korean wave" ("Hallyu").

Thailand blasts: 'Iranian' bomber injured in Bangkok

Thailand blasts: 'Iranian' bomber injured in Bangkok

Thai media said that an identity card found nearby indicated the man could be of Iranian origin

A man thought to be Iranian has had both legs blown off after attempting to throw a bomb at police in the Thai capital, Bangkok, officials said.
Two other explosions were reported in the same busy commercial district of the Thai capital, injuring four others.
Police said one blast took place at the house the injured man rented with other Iranians. One of those men also threw a bomb at a taxi in the capital.
Last month the US embassy warned of possible attacks in Bangkok.
The blasts come just one day after two bomb attacks targeted Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia.
Israel has accused Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah of orchestrating the attacks. Iran denied the allegations.
Identity card Police told the BBC that the first explosion happened around 1420 local time (0720 GMT) at a house in the Ekamai area in central Bangkok, which three Iranians were believed to have rented for a month.
Two men managed to escape the explosion that severely damaged the house, according to police, but the third man who suffered minor injuries tried to hail a taxi. When the taxi refused to stop for him, he threw at least one bomb at it. Police believe one bomb exploded under the taxi.
The third explosion happened when that man then attempted to throw another bomb at police, but missed, and ended up blowing his own legs off.
He is said to be receiving emergency treatment in hospital. Thai media said that an identity card found nearby indicated the man could be of Iranian origin.
"The police have control of the situation. It is thought that the suspect might be storing more explosives inside his house," a police spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Ahmadinejad: Iran to reveal new nuke achievements

Ahmadinejad: Iran to reveal new nuke achievements

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran will soon reveal "very big new nuclear achievements."

Ahmadinejad spoke at a rally in Tehran on Saturday as Iranians marked the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that toppled the country's pro-Western monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power.

Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the upcoming announcement but insisted Iran would never give up its uranium enrichment — a process that makes material for reactors as well as weapons.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran has said it is forced to manufacture nuclear fuel rods, which provide fuel for reactors, on its own since international sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's state TV is showing tens of thousands of pro-government demonstrators rallying across the country to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

A real-size model of the U.S. drone RQ-170 Sentinel, captured by Iran in December near the border with Afghanistan, is on display at the rally in Tehran's famous Azadi, or Freedom, square.

Iran has touted the drone's capture as one of its chief successes against the West. The TV report says the drone is a "symbol of power" of the Iranian armed forces "against the global arrogance" of the U.S.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to address the Tehran demonstration on Saturday.

The 1979 revolution toppled Iran's pro-west monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power.

'Iran must attack Israel by 2014'

'Iran must attack Israel by 2014'

Khamenei strategist releases document providing legal, religious justification for annihilation of Jewish people.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's strategist provided the legal and religious justification for the annihilation of Israel and the Jewish people, in a document published on conservative Farsi website Alef. Reports of the document began to circulate the internet this week.

The document, written by strategy specialist Alireza Forghani, outlined the reasons why, "In the name of Allah, Iran must attack Israel by 2014."
Claiming to only represent the personal opinion of its author, and not the Iranian government, the doctrine was published on a website believed to have close ties with the Ayatollah.
Forghani called the Jewish state a "cancerous tumor for the Middle East" and  reminded his readers that "All our troubles are due to Israel!"
"Every Muslim is obliged to equip himself against Israel," he urged, reasoning that if the Muslim world does not attack Israel in the near future, "the opportunity could be lost and it may not be possible to stop them."
The document explained that the war against Israel must be carried out in the name of "defensive jihad" - or the protecting of Islam against aggressors "who want to gain domination over the Muslims and kill them."
It also clarified that although Israel had yet to strike Iran, its occupation of Palestinian lands already justifies an attack as Islam dictates that "the political borders [of the world] cannot divide Muslims and the earth is divided into two parts - Muslim countries and non-Muslim countries."

Forghani pointed out that Israel is the only country in the world with a Jewish majority, using the findings of the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics's last consensus for veracity.
He posited that since Israel requires US and western support in order to attack Iran, the latter should take advantage of western "passiveness" to "wipe out Israel."
The document also provides a "concise description of mid- and long-range ballistic missiles that can target territories of this regional cancerous tumor" and destroy Israel in "less than nine minutes."
